The Weekend Watchlist

Dave Made a Maze (2017) - This movie is like the demented love child of The Muppets, John Dies at the End, and Mark Z. Danielewski's horror novel, House of Leaves. As a fan of low budget, campy horror comedy, Dave Made a Maze appealed to my fan sensibilities. As a millennial, it appealed to the sense of vague shiftlessness and interrupted adulthood commonly associated with my generation. Although the end of the film was a bit dissatisfying (maybe that's the point, though), it is one of the most visually inventive and charming movies I've seen recently, and accomplishes all that with minimal budgets and a small cast of relatively unknown actors.

Streaming on Hulu.

The Babysitter (2017) - Another horror comedy, this is much more polished than my first pick, but still charming in its own way. The two main leads – Samara Weaving as Bee (the titular babysitter) and Judah Lewis as Cole (the 12 year old Kevin McCallister-esque kid that Bee babysits) - are excellently cast and lots of fun. Even though the horrific and suspenseful moments don't always land, the jokes do. As a cult film fan, I also appreciated the references to Billy Jack, the Godfather series, and the pretty obvious homage to the Home Alone movies.

Streaming on Netflix.

What Happened to Monday (2017) - I haven't had the chance to sit down and watch this yet, but the premise has me intrigued. In a dystopian future society, there is a strict limit on the number of children per family; a group of identical septuplets must be incredibly careful to avoid being detected by the government and "put to sleep." Each sibling is given one day each week they can leave the home and experience the world (and a corresponding name: "Thursday" goes out on Thursdays, etc.) – a system that seems to be working until Monday goes missing. Boasting a great cast (including Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, and Willem Dafoe) and a cool Blade Runner-esque visual design, this one looks like it'll be worth the watch.

Streaming on Netflix.
